Chants Compared

Please listen to and compare the two selections below. Both are renditions of the "Puer natus est nobis", the Introit for Christmas Mass in the day time. The first selection is (Franko-) Gregorian Chant. The second is Old Roman Chant. Notice the difference between the Frankish chant of the more northern European influence and the Roman chant of the Mediterranean orbit which is a direct heir of the modal system brought over from the East.

1. (Franko-) Gregorian Chant
as sung by the Benedictine monks of Santo Domingo de Silos

2. Old Roman Chant
as sung by Ensemble Organum, conducted by Marcel Pérès
